Welcome to the CUGCR Website

The Cambridge University Guild of Change Ringers was formed in 1879 to practise the art of change ringing. Today we are an active student society who organise many ringing and social events throughout the year.

We ring at several churches within Cambridge, and welcome ringers of all abilities. To find out more about the Guild, explore this website, e-mail secretary@cugcr.org.uk, or feel free to join us at one of our practices.

Remembering Harry Winter

Posted 23rd May 2011

In 1974 when he was a choral exhibitioner at Christ’s, Harry wrote a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, somewhat in the style of CV Stanford, possibly as a counter to the Tudor music which formed the main repertoire of the then male voice choir. These two pieces will be the settings for Evensong in Christ’s on Thursday May 26th (18:45) together with the anthem “I will love thee” by Kerry Beaumont, which was written for Harry’s and Michele’s wedding.

After the service at around 20:15 there will be a curry at the Saffron Brasserie on Hills Road near St Paul’s church, meeting beforehand in the pub opposite. The restaurant probably won’t be too busy on a Thursday but still it would be helpful to have some idea of numbers (please contact Alan Winter via aw21@cam.ac.uk).

BBC filming at StAG

Posted 2nd May 2011

Ever wanted to be on a national TV programme? Read on…

The BBC are coming to Cambridge in a couple of weeks to make a programme about ringing for BBC4. It’s intended that they will stop off at our practice at StAG, before producing big performance on a Saturday afternoon featuring 3 churches and a flash mob of handbell ringers.

The details:

Thursday 12th May: Filming at StAG practice night. If you strongly object to being on camera it’s probably worth avoiding practice that night (coincidentally, it’s also our last practice there before we shut up for the exam period).

Saturday 21st May: Big performance. I need 8 star-seeking volunteers to ring at StAG – probably stedman triples so they can link it in with the whole history thing. The timetable is:

1300-1400 Everyone gets together to be addressed by Charles Hazelwood, the presenter.
1430-1445 Performance
1530-1630 Ringing again, with the camera crew inside the ringing room.
Filming will only be for a 15-minute slot within this hour, but it’s not known how quickly and in what order they will get round all 3 churches.
1630-1800 Pub (still on camera) to get the ringers’ reactions.
